Pittsburgh in the afternoon, Follansbee, West Virginia in the evening
There's this wonderful and quirky cigar and coffee shop in Pittsburgh's "Strip District" (near as I can tell, it has nothing to do with red-light type bars!) called the Leaf and Bean. Every Saturday afternoon, they have a singer-songwriter show, usually featuring Bill Toms, Tom Brieding and others. Bill invited me along to do a set or two and what an amazing time it was. We were playing half indoors, half outdoors, the people were amazing and we sold a ton of CDs! What more could one ask for.... Oh wait, we smoked some pretty good cigars and drank some stiff coffee as well!
Later that night, we headed back up into the mountains of West Virginia to this huge bar in this tiny town along the river banks of the Ohio River. It was a biker bar caller Mustang Sally's and when we arrived there was a huge dart tournament in progress.
Plenty of stories came out of this show (like a biker trying to get me to take his hog for a spin, and the bartender dusting off a case of Molson Golden that he got in 1989 for "his new Canadian friends".... no, I didn't drink it!). Unfortunately, there is no audio-visual record of this show because Gilles made friends with a bunch of towns-folk and took off to another bar further up the mountain! I was sure that was the last time I was going to see Gilles (at least until I saw him on Unsolved Mysteries or something). But he did return, just a little worse for wear!
I played a set with Bernie the drummer backing me up, then Bill Toms and Hard Rain played a great rockin' set (of which I joined in for a few songs at the end).
